We wear the bags
Most GCs manage subs. Les leads a crew, and he’s on it — framing, siding, trim, tile, all of it. If your house has tile work in it, there’s a real chance Les set it himself.
We subcontract exactly seven things, and only because our general liability insurance requires it: excavation, concrete, drywall, roofing, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. Everything else — the actual building of the house — is us, on-site, every day.
The crew isn’t hired per project and let go after. It’s the same guys who started with Les, still working together. That matters more than it sounds like it should: a crew that’s built ten houses together doesn’t relearn each other’s habits on your job. They already know them.
Fifty-one years, a lot of different rooms
Les grew up around trades — his father was an electrician, his grandfather a carpenter and painter. Before starting Whitefish Property Pro’s, he spent years doing remodel work and property management: maintaining, fixing, and rebuilding other people’s houses, plus landscaping work on the side. That’s a different education than building new construction from a set of plans. You learn what actually fails in a house, what gets neglected, what a homeowner wishes had been done differently the first time. It shows up in how we build now.
Les has also done work well outside construction — marketing, TV and film production, even time in a 3D printing business and running a whitetail deer farm in Wisconsin. None of that is why you’d hire him. But fifty-one years and that many different rooms taught him how to run a job, manage people, and solve a problem he hasn’t seen before without panicking about it. On a custom build, that comes up more often than anyone wants to admit.
